The City of Newport - Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area

The Yaquina Head Area is accessible from Lighthouse Drive situated off Highway 101 in the northern end of Newport. Lighthouse Drive heads west to the park entrance and then leads west out to the Interpretive Center, further moving onto the parking lot overseeing the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. The Interpretive Center is a very nice facility with a variety of interpretive displays covering different aspects of the Yaquina Head Area including its geological and natural history. Also covered in the center is information about the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and the wildlife found along the coastline and in the interior portions of the headland. The Interpretive Center has information displayed on the local wildlife seen recently and posts a daily schedule of interpretive events going on at the park facility. The Interpretive Center houses a gift store offering a variety of apparel merchandise, interpretive books and other media products on the Yaquina Head Area and on the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. A trail from the center leads south under a highway tunnel to the Ocean Bluff Observation Deck overlooking the southern end of the park. The deck area affords scenic views of the oncoming waves cascading along Agate Beach as well of distant visuals of the jetties at Yaquina Bay in Newport. At this Ocean Bluff Viewpoint, the Lighthouse Trail starts west along the cliffs and works its way out to the Cobble Beach and its Observation Deck, finally ending at the viewpoints surrounding the Yaquina Head Lighthouse. The Cobble Beach Deck offers the visitor the opportunity to observe Harbor Seals hauled out at Seal Island as well as the nesting seabirds on the offshore rocks raising their young chicks during spring and summer. The other trail accessible from the Ocean Bluff Viewpoint is the Quarry Cove Trail leading east along the headland crest and ending at the Quarry Cove Intertidal Area. The intertidal area features wheel chair accessible trails along the tide pools created by the BLM from a former on-site rock quarry.
