The City of Newport - Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site

From Don Davis City Park, the beach strand of Nye Beach extends southward eventually meeting the park grounds of the Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site and the Yaquina Bay Jetty System. The South Nye Beach Area includes a variety of lodging properties sited along the oceanfront plus other lodging properties offering ocean views on the east side of the street. Heading further south, the lodging properties give way to several city streets of residential development before meeting the entrance into the State Park. The Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site is situated on the southern end of Nye Beach and overlooks the Yaquina Bay Jetty System. The park is home to the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse, operating today as a private aid to navigation. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is accessible to the public and features wonderful time period exhibits on the lifestyle enjoyed by the light-keeper during the early 1870s. Also, the Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site is home to the Newport Fishermen Memorial Sanctuary built to honor those individuals lost at sea. The sanctuary includes a memorial alter stand for honoring the deceased and offers bench seating for individual or group remembrances. The Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site offers two beach access points leading down to the south end of Nye Beach and the north jetty. At the north end of the park is a playground area set-up with outdoor equipment. For picnicking, the park provides several locations with picnic tables and grass lawn areas as well as one sheltered location with covered tables. The scenery surrounding the picnic areas compliments the picnicking experience with views of the lighthouse, the boating activity within the Yaquina Bay Channel and views of the white water surf action along Nye Beach. Other park amenities include several interpretive viewpoints and public restrooms.
