The City of Newport - Historic Newport Bayfront Area |
||||||||||||
| The other historic section in the City of Newport Oregon is the Newport Bayfront located on the inner harbor area of the Yaquina Bay. The Newport Bayfront draws its roots to the original founding of the City of Newport and today still operates as one of the largest Working Bayfront Areas found on the Oregon Coast. The Port of Newport plays a vital role in maximizing the business and recreational use of the Yaquina Bay Region. The Ports primary functions are offering shipping terminal facilities, commercial and sport boat moorages and other support services. The Port was originally constructed as a deep-water port to provide shipping services to local, regional, and international vessels and to service one of the largest commercial fishing fleets found on the Oregon Coast. The Port of Newport works with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to support the Yaquina Bay Jetty System. The north jetty is measured at 7,000 feet in length along with the south jetty measured at 8,600 feet long in distance. The Port of Newport administers the main moorage locations built along the north side of the Yaquina Bay for both commercial fishing boats and sport boats plus also manages the Port of Newports Marina and RV Park located at South Beach. At the southwest end of the Bayfront is the U.S. Coast Guard Yaquina Bay Station. Operating with a presence in the Newport Area since 1895, the Yaquina Bay Station is an important asset to the community providing a wealth of services including search and rescue operations. The Yaquina Bay Station Facilities feature an administration and operations building, crew barracks, and a boathouse and haul-out facility. Also, the Yaquina Bay Station is responsible for the command and control of Station Depoe Bay located in the City of Depoe Bay. |
