The City of Newport - Newport Bayfront Area

The Historic Newport Bayfront is a combination of different commercial business and residential interests blended together forming one of the most popular aspects to community life in the City of Newport. The Bayfront houses a variety of businesses supporting both commercial and recreational fishing activities including fish processing plants, marine supply and bait shops, fuel docks and marine repair services, charter boats and wildlife tours, and a yacht club. Some of the fishermen sell their catch directly off the boat where fresh salmon, tuna and crab can be found at attractive prices. Both local residents and visitors are drawn to the Bayfront for its unique appeal and its historical charm. Many of the commercial buildings have wall murals painted on them reflecting marine and nautical themes, both past and present. Taking a meander around the Bayfront pondering over these amazing wall murals can be a wonderful experience on its own. The north half of the Newport Bayfront hosts a variety of tourist oriented attractions plus a boardwalk area set along the waterfront. The boardwalk features fabulous views of the boats docked within the harbor, the waters of Yaquina Bay, the distant Yaquina Bay Bridge and bench seating areas for admiring the local scenery. One of the popular Bayfront attractions is the Port Dock One Pier located at the south end of the wooden boardwalk. The pier heads east over the waters of the bay and overlooks the sea lions resting on the floating docks below. These sea lions are male animals that have not joined the breeding herds in California and utilize the Oregon Coast as a place to take leisure and feed. The south half of the Bayfront includes commercial businesses like fish processing plants intermixed with many retail businesses serving the needs of the locals and tourists alike.
