The City of Newport - Yaquina Bay to the City of Toledo

As one of Oregon’s largest bays, the Yaquina Bay Estuary is a vital natural resource to the citizens of the Central Oregon Coast for its commercial business value and its enormous recreational uses including fishing, clamming, crabbing, boating and wildlife viewing opportunities. The Estuary supports a thriving ecosystem of different plants and animals living in various salinity levels from the fresh water of the Yaquina River intermixing with the ocean waters of the Pacific Ocean. One of Lincoln County’s most scenic drives is set along the Yaquina Bay Road and runs thirteen miles from the Historic Newport Bayfront to the City of Toledo Oregon. The road runs along the northern edge of the Yaquina River as it works its way inland to the City of Toledo and offers many sightseeing viewpoints on the way. The scenic drive is a great location for observing local wildlife including Blue Herons, White Egrets and Bald Eagles that feed either on the shore banks or in the river. The drive features historical markers identifying several communities that thrived during the height of the railroad era of the 1800’s including Yaquina City, the ending point for the railroad line from Corvallis and the Town Site of Oysterville where oyster beds once thrived.
