The City of Newport - Yaquina Bay Bridge

The Yaquina Bay Bridge is one of the significant landmarks built within the City of Newport and showcases the architectural elegance of the Oregon Coast Bridge System. While the two lighthouses in Newport draw history enthusiasts to the area, the Yaquina Bay Bridge is another landmark that visitors and residents cherish as well. The Yaquina Bay Bridge rises over the water channel of the Yaquina Bay and connects the communities of Newport and South Beach together. The bridge was completed in 1936 as part of the Roosevelt Military Highway initiative and opened up travel along the Oregon Coast. The design of the bridge is another fine example of the talents crafted by Conde B. McCullough, Oregon’s famous bridge architect of the 1920s and 1930s. The 3,223-foot structure of the bridge is a marvel of bridge design and architectural appeal and is accessible to the public for viewing. Each end of the bridge has a pedestrian plaza with stairways leading to observation decks providing up-close views of the bridge and the beautiful surroundings of the Yaquina Bay. The bridge itself has sidewalks on either side offering another great viewpoint for overlooking the Yaquina Bay and for photographing the area. Other locations offering superb vantage points of the Yaquina Bay Bridge include the Yaquina Bay State Recreation Site, the South Beach Marina Area and the South Jetty Road. The Yaquina Bay Bridge continues to be a popular view attraction for many coastal residences, especially during a clear sunset with the sun setting behind the arches of the bridge.
