The City of Newport - North Agate Beach Community Area

The main section of the North Agate Beach Community is located in an area west of Highway 101, north of Yaquina Head and south of the Pacific Shores Motorcoach Resort. One of the main access points to this part of the community is from a highway turnout leading onto NW 55th Street entering the southeast corner of the neighborhood. Another access point is available on NW 58th Street. The streets of the neighborhood generally run east to west similar to a small grid system and eventually encounter the coastal bluffs overlooking the beach below on the western end of the community. Due to the geological structure and height of the cliffs, this community area does not possess a public beach access point maintained by the City of Newport. While a few rough nature trails exist that traverse over the cliffs down to the beach, the safest beach accesses are located either at NW 68th Street or south at the Lucky Gap Trail to Agate Beach. The Lucky Gap Trail is located just to the south of the Yaquina Headland and provides access to Agate Beach, a long beach strand that heads south until it meets historic Nye Beach. The community offers a variety of housing choices within the City of Newport including both site-built and manufactured homes. The western end of the community features views of the Pacific Ocean and of the Yaquina Headland. On the southwest corner of the neighborhood is a small subdivision named Lighthouse Estates, known for its wonderful home sites overlooking the wave action on the northern side of Yaquina Head. Other views features the wildlife living along the rocky shoreline of the headland as well as the nesting seabirds found offshore on Colony Rock. At night, the community is enlivened with scenes of the centuries-old tradition of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse casting its powerful light beacon twenty-one miles out to sea to protect the local shipping lanes off the Oregon Coast.
