The City of Newport - Yaquina Head Lighthouse

The Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is located in the northern end of Newport and is run by the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Department of the Interior. The park features many wonderful activities to spend the day including public access viewing of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, still providing navigational aid to mariners out at sea since its inaugural lighting on August 20, 1873. The lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse on the Oregon Coast at 93 feet in height and features a first order Fresnel Lens as its light optic. Public touring of the lighthouse and the attached workroom are available through guided interpretive tours handled by park staff and volunteers. The workroom and the lighthouse tower are the only structures remaining from the original lighthouse station and both structures have been placed in the National Registry of Historic Places. The guided tour climbs up four stages of spiral stairs rising 110 stairs to the watch room, just below the lantern room. Visitors can pop their head into the lantern house and observe the automated light assembly in operation plus view the magnificently designed Fresnel Len made in Paris France with its 258 glass prisms installed to maximize the light beam. The signature light pattern of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse is currently set at two seconds on, two seconds off, two seconds on, and fourteen seconds off, then repeating again.
