The City of Newport - Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area

A visit to the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area Park Facility offers the visitor with a variety of choices for spending time enjoying the scenic qualities of the Yaquina Headland and the surrounding seascapes of the Newport Area. On the western end of the park is a public parking lot for gaining access to several attractions in the park. One pathway leads to the outside grounds surrounding the Yaquina Head Lighthouse where one can observe the building construction used in the lighthouse station during the time period from 1871 to 1873. Also, the pathway leads to the lighthouse workroom where the guided interpretive tours are held. There are several viewpoints around the lighthouse offering the chance to view the wildlife living on the coastline, or on the nearby offshore rocks. A variety of wildlife found living at the headland year round includes Harbor Seals, Black Oystercatchers and Western Gulls. In spring and summer, the area is teaming with nesting seabirds including Common Murres, Pigeon Guillemots, Brandt’s and Pelagic Cormorants, and other migratory birds like Brown Pelicans. Whale watching activities are popular for most of the year for observing a resident pod of gray whales living in the local ocean waters plus for viewing the annual gray whale migrations occurring every winter and spring. On the east side of the parking lot is the trailhead for the Salal Hill Trail. This trail winds its way up the hill offering wonderful vistas of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and the coastline scenery, both north and south of Yaquina Head. The trail ends on top of Salal Hill affording views looking down over the Interpretive Center and the miles of sandy beach accumulating on both sides of the headland. A second trail is accessible from the parking lot leading to Cobble Beach and its unusual beach of black cobbles, along with its nice tide pool areas.
