Alsea Bay Bridge - The Historic Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center

The Oregon Coast contains one of the most magnificent sets of concrete bridges found in America, with the majority of these bridges created by Conde B. McCullough, Oregon’s Master Bridge Builder. McCullough was instrumental in building a large number of bridges throughout all of Oregon, with some of his most acclaimed bridges built along the Oregon Coast Highway System including the first bridge made in America using a concrete tied-arch design. These bridges were constructed utilizing the most advanced techniques at the time and reflected European Design Concepts featuring Roman Influences and Art Deco Finishes including his signature design style of incorporating arches into the bridge structures. McCullough’s designs exemplified functional brilliance working in harmony with the surrounding environment to create an architectural elegance to the bridge itself. One of his beloved bridges was the Alsea Bay Bridge completed in 1936 providing access over the waters of the Alsea Bay Estuary. Over time, the bridge began to deteriorate to the point where the Oregon Department of Transportation decided to replace it with a new one expected to last at least 100 years. In 1991, the replacement bridge and the new Alsea Bay Bridge Interpretive Center were dedicated to the public. The Alsea Bay Interpretive Center offers displays covering the replacement bridge project plus historical information concerning the evolution of transportation development along the Oregon Coast.
