The Wildlife of the Alsea Bay Estuary - Old Town Waldport Community Area

The Alsea Bay Estuary supports a rich diversity of wildlife species thriving within the estuarine waters of the bay and the Alsea River System. From the end of the Bayshore Spit to the open water channels found near the Port of Alsea, a resident population of Harbor Seals lives in the estuarine waters throughout the year. Often, Harbor Seals are seen at several haul-out locations throughout the lower bay including the tip of the Bayshore Spit and also from a sand bar island formed to the west of the Alsea Bay Bridge. The Alsea Bay is a great spot for clamming and crabbing activities drawing many outdoor enthusiasts to the area. Many bird species utilize the resources of the estuary including Bald Eagles, Ospreys, Great Blue Herons, White Egrets, Cormorants, Western Seagulls and Brown Pelicans. The Alsea Bay Estuary fosters several fish runs in the bay including Cutthroat Trout, Coho Salmon and Chinook Salmon. The Old Town Waldport Community Area draws its roots to the early development of the City of Waldport and to its heritage of life along the waters of the Alsea Bay. Old Town Waldport features a combination of retail business establishments, commercial properties and quaint residential neighborhoods intermixed together along the setting of the Alsea Bay. Old Town Waldport is home to several Points of Interests including the waterfront facilities of the Port of Alsea and Robinson Park, multiple community access points for reaching the beach strand of the inner Alsea Bay, and the Waldport Heritage Museum managed by the Alsi Historical and Genealogical Society. Old Town Waldport contains two city parks located on Highway 34 known as the Veteran’s Memorial City Park and the Meridian City Park.
