The Community of Seal Rock - The Offshore Rock Formations of Seal Rocks |
||||||||||||
| The Community of Seal Rock is famous for its rock formations located offshore known as Seal Rocks. Seal Rocks are the remnants of ancient volcanic basalt activity that occurred in the area and these formations have been shaped over time by the forces of nature and the oncoming surf. Seal Rocks includes a combination of sea stacks and basalt needles, rock islands and submerged reefs. The Seal Rocks formations are protected as part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge and offer an important habitat to many coastal species that reside both above and below the ocean waters. Key wildlife utilizing the area includes seals, sea lions and some species of nesting seabirds. The submerged reefs and tide pool areas situated within the Seal Rocks Area are home to a wide variety of marine species. There are several areas available to the public within the Community of Seal Rock for enjoying these rock formations, both from Highway 101 turnoffs and via beach access. The rock formations themselves are not accessible to human exploration but the various vantage points found along the shoreline provide excellent viewing opportunities of the rock formations and the wildlife utilizing these nearshore habitats. Seal Rocks continues to be a favorite location for many scenic photographers capturing the awesome beauty of the area, especially during sunrise and sunset lighting conditions. At the center of Seal Rocks is Elephant Rock, a magnificent rock formation that dominates the scenery around the Seal Rock State Recreation Site. Elephant Rock itself is one of the most photographed subjects captured on the Oregon Coast. During powerful winter storms and other heavy surf conditions, the area around Seal Rocks is one of the best places on the Oregon Coast for enjoying the spectacular displays of water being propelled into the air by crashing waves slamming into the rugged coastline. |
