North Aerial Guide Overview - Tour Two
Taft and the Siletz Bay

The Taft Area has long been a popular destination for both visitors and residents alike due to its proximity to Highway 101 and its unique beach location. The south-facing portion of the beach fronts the Siletz Bay. The calmer wave action and tide lines make this a popular place for many people to enjoy “On the Beach” activities including sand castle building, picnicking and swimming. The beach area heads west and wraps around north to provide beach goers with the Pacific Ocean experience along with the roar of the cascading white water surf. The Taft commercial zone includes several hotel/condominium complexes, several small retail boutique stores, a classic beachside ice cream/diner and a popular chowder house/seafood restaurant. The Siletz Bay Park is located off Highway 101 and features an interpretive center, restrooms and picnic tables, and bay access. Also, the Siletz Bay Park overlooks Schooner Creek as its drains into the bay. The Siletz Bay is subject to tidal changes that causes several high and low water periods each day. During low tide, outdoor activities include clamming and shrimping, and during high tide, dock fishing and crabbing become popular activities. The Taft Area overlooks the mouth of the Siletz Bay as it meets the Pacific Ocean near the end of the Salishan Spit. The end of the spit is a popular haul-out area for harbor seals and sea lions. Bird watchers can enjoy the area with a variety of local birds (bald eagles, herons, pelicans, egrets, hawks and owls) and other migratory species that stop in the area along their journey’s way.
