Siletz Bay Estuary

The Siletz Bay Estuary is one of Oregon’s 22 estuarine systems located in the State and one of Lincoln County’s natural wonders. The Siletz Bay Estuary is fed by freshwater sources including Schooner Creek, Drift Creek and the Siletz River. The estuary is estimated at 1,461 acres in size, along with an estimated watershed area of 373 square miles. The estuary is classified as a Drowned River Mouth Estuary within Oregon’s Estuary Classification System. The estuary is home to a diverse biological zone supporting a variety of species, and yet provides a water backdrop for coastal development and use. The estuary features the Siletz Bay Natural Wildlife Refuge Area, a protected area of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The refuge protects coastal wetlands and uplands next to the Siletz Bay and enhances the habitat for a variety of species including salmon and steelhead, mammals, shorebirds, wading birds and waterfowl. While some areas of the estuary are restricted for protection of the habitat, a portion of the estuary is available for recreational or development use. Key recreational activities include fishing, crabbing, clamming, swimming, boating, canoeing/kayaking, and wildlife/bird watching.
