Siletz Bay Estuary - Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge

The Siletz Bay Estuary is a special area where salt water and fresh water meet to create a thriving and diverse ecosystem. The habitat features animals and plants that thrive together living among the continual changes of sunlight, wind, water inflows, tidal changes, seasonal weather changes and the effects of the moon and its lunar orbit. To protect part of this pristine environment, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has created the Siletz Bay National Wildlife Refuge Area. Located off Highway 101, the area is home to many species of wildlife including red tailed hawks, bald eagles, peregrine falcons and other raptors. Bird watching is especially good along this refuge area for observing estuarine dependent species such as the Blue Heron, Egrets and other waterfowl that search for food within the mud flats, salt marshes and other tidal zones. Shorebirds and other wading birds are prevalent including Brown Pelicans and Caspian Terns as well as migratory birds that enjoy the habitat on a seasonal basis like Canadian Geese. On the east side of Highway 101, the wildlife refuge meets the north end of the Salishan Hills, a residential development within Salishan and evergreen stands of timber. The western side of the Siletz Bay includes the Salishan Spit and its associated neighborhood (Salishan Residential Development), or the Salishan Leasehold as it is commonly known. The southern end of the Siletz Bay meets the golf course and walking trails of the Salishan Area. The Salishan Area is part of Gleneden Beach, an unincorporated area of Lincoln County.
