Cape Foulweather - The Town of Otter Rock

Rising stoutly above the ocean, Cape Foulweather dominates the Otter Crest coastline. Cape Foulweather was discovered and named by Captain James Cook, the famed British Explorer and Navigator who was the first to view the mainland of North America on its Pacific Coast side during his voyage in March of 1778. Captain Cook named the promontory encountered on that historic day after the severe weather that almost sank his ship, and even today, winds in excess of 100 miles per hour can occur on top of the cape during stormy conditions. The crest of Cape Foulweather contains the Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint, an Oregon State Park Facility and the privately owned Lookout Observatory and Gift Shop. The Otter Crest State Scenic Viewpoint features stunning ocean vistas that come from being situated on the top of Cape Foulweather at almost 500 feet above sea level. These terrific views are best enjoyed at the paved observation lookout built on top of the sheer rock faces found within Cape Foulweather, near the southwestern end of the park. The fenced lookout area features expansive views of the ocean shimmering below, the picturesque seaside cliffs fronting the Town of Otter Rock, and the sandy beach areas of North Newport heading southward towards the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area. The Town of Otter Rock serves as the transition point where the craggy coastlines of the Otter Crest Area change over to the sandy beaches of Beverly Beach and Moolack Beach. These beaches extend southward for many miles ending at Yaquina Head, a promontory jutting almost two miles out into the Pacific Ocean and the site of the Yaquina Head Lighthouse, the Oregon Coast’s tallest lighthouse.
