Yaquina Bay Estuary - Yaquina River

As one of Oregon’s largest bays, the Yaquina Bay Estuary is a vital natural resource to the Central Oregon Coast for its commercial business value and its enormous recreational uses including fishing, clamming, crabbing, boating and wildlife viewing opportunities. The Estuary supports a thriving ecosystem of different plants and animals living in various salinity levels from the combination of fresh river water intermixing together with the salt water of the ocean. Many of Newport’s neighborhoods overlook the Yaquina Bay offering view lines of the Newport Bayfront and the Yaquina Bay Bridge. Two notable subdivisions include Walker Heights and Yaquina Knoll. The Yaquina Bay Road Scenic Drive is one of Lincoln County’s most scenic drives connecting the Newport Bayfront to the City of Toledo. The road traverses along the course of the Yaquina River for thirteen miles providing stopping points for observing estuarine wildlife including Blue Herons, Egrets and Bald Eagles. Also, the drive features display markers sharing interpretive information about the area’s pioneer history including the former communities of Yaquina City and Oysterville.
