The Yaquina Bay Bridge - The Community of South Beach

The Yaquina Bay Bridge is one of the Oregon Coast’s most enduring attractions and rises over the water channel of the Yaquina Bay connecting the Communities of Newport and South Beach together as one local economy. The bridge was completed in 1936 as part of the Roosevelt Military Highway initiative and opened up travel along the Oregon Coast. The bridge design is another fine example of the talents crafted by Conde B. McCullough, Oregon’s famous bridge architect of the 1920s and 1930s. The 3,223-foot bridge structure is a marvel of structural design in addition to its appealing architecture and art deco finishes. The bridge design includes public access points located at each end of the bridge featuring a pedestrian plaza with stairways leading to observation decks providing close-up views of the bridge and the lovely surroundings of the Yaquina Bay Area. Also, traveling across the bridge provides incredible views of the surrounding Yaquina Bay Jetties. Still the quintessential landmark of the Newport Coastline Area, the bridge is especially alluring during a crimson-lined sunset when the sun sets behind the arches of the bridge.
