The Community of Seal Rock - The Offshore Rock Formations of Seal Rocks

The Community of Seal Rock is well-liked for its picturesque rock formations located offshore known as Seal Rocks. Seal Rocks are the remnants of ancient volcanic basalt activity that occurred in the area and these formations have been shaped over time by the forces of nature and the oncoming surf. Seal Rocks include a combination of sea stacks and basalt needles, rock islands and submerged reefs. All of these areas is protected as part of the Oregon Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Key wildlife utilizing the area includes seals, sea lions and some species of nesting seabirds. The Seal Rocks Formation continues to be a popular subject for many scenic photographers capturing the awesome beauty of the area, especially during sunrise and sunset lighting conditions. At the center of Seal Rocks is Elephant Rock, a magnificent rock formation dominating the scenery found around the Seal Rock State Recreation Site. Elephant Rock itself is one of the most photographed subjects captured on the Oregon Coast. The Community of Seal Rock still keeps to its historic roots as a destination getaway with a small area of commercial development, built mostly on the east side of Highway 101. Highway 101 is the main resource for bringing daily visitors into the Seal Rock Area, especially during the summer months when vacation travel is at its peak. The Seal Rock Business Corridor is composed of small businesses operating along the roadside catering to Highway 101 travelers as well as overnight guests staying on the Oregon Coast. The Seal Rock Business Corridor features a variety of small businesses including art galleries and wood carving studios, gift shops, fudge/candy stores, snack food eateries, and several dining establishments.
