The City of Yachats - Yachats 804 Trail System and Oregon State Parks

A key attraction found within the City of Yachats is the Yachats 804 Trail System. The Yachats 804 Trail System is part of the former County Road 804, the route used for travel between the Yachats Area and the Waldport Area before the Oregon Coast Highway System was completed in the 1930s. The area was the scene of an extensive court battle for public ownership and right-of-way access that was eventually decided by the Oregon Supreme Court allowing public access to this area in 1986. The Yachats 804 Trail System is available for exploring from the park grounds of the Oregon State Park known as the Smelt Sands State Recreation Site. The park features a pathway connecting to the north section of the Yachats 804 Trail which heads northward for almost three quarters of a mile ending at gently sloping pathway leading down to the beach strand of Sandy Beach. Along this northern route, the Yachats 804 Trail meanders along the rocky coastline offering wonderful views of the crashing waves and several spouting horns, small pocket beaches and tide pool areas, and the natural vegetation thriving along the coast. The Smelt Sands State Recreation Site is known for its excellent rock fishing as well as its Smelt Fish Run, an annual event when the Smelt Fish come ashore to spawn on the beach. The other section of the Yachats 804 Trail System extends another mile southward, eventually ending at the Yachats State Recreation Area, an Oregon State Park overlooking the mouth of the Yachats River. The Yachats State Recreation Area provides benches for enjoying the natural scenery in addition to offering picnic grounds, public restrooms and beach access.
