The North Aerial Guide Overview Tour One starts at Cape Meares, an ancient basalt promontory found along the northern reaches of the popular Three Capes Scenic Drive located in Tillamook County. Cape Meares is the northernmost of the three capes encountered along this scenic drive and includes the historic site of the Cape Meares Lighthouse, the smallest lighthouse built on the Oregon Coast. The Cape Meares State Scenic Viewpoint is an Oregon State Park offering viewpoints of three national wildlife refuges in the area as well as providing public access to the lighthouse. The tour then heads southward along the coastal route of the Three Capes Scenic Drive covering Cape Meares and the second cape, Cape Lookout as well as the coastal communities of Oceanside, Netarts, Sand Lake and Tierra Del Mar. This section of coastline includes lengthy stretches of sandy shorelines intermixed with the rock formations of the three capes plus several estuaries including the Netarts Bay Estuary and the Sand Lake Estuary.
The tour captures the beauty of the southern section of the Three Capes Scenic Drive including the third cape, Cape Kiwanda, Haystack Rock, and the Pacific City Area. The Pacific City Area is a growing coastal community featuring many new residential developments built near the fabulous beach strand extending southward from Cape Kiwanda to the Nestucca Bay Estuary. The tour continues southward into the coastal village community of Neskowin, known for its pristine beach areas and its lush hillsides of coastal evergreen forests. The tour concludes covering the rugged promontory of Cascade Head and the mouth opening of the picturesque Salmon River Estuary. The Cascade Head Area is the defining location where Tillamook County changes over to Lincoln County. Key Points of Interest showcased in this tour include Cape Meares, Cape Meares Lighthouse, Cape Lookout, Sand Lake Recreation Area and Estuary, Cape Kiwanda, Haystack Rock, Nestucca River, Proposal Rock, Cascade Head and the Salmon River Estuary.
